Unrivaled's Injury Crisis: What's the Real Story Behind the Mounting Reports? (2026)

Unrivaled's Injury Concerns: A Complex Story Unveiled

The Unrivaled league, just one week into its second season, is already grappling with a mounting injury report that doesn't tell the whole story. While the league announced that Satou Sabally and Napheesa Collier will miss the 2026 season due to injuries sustained during the 2025 WNBA season, other players have also faced setbacks. Dana Evans, Tiffany Hayes, Aari McDonald, Sabrina Ionescu, Kahleah Copper, and Brittney Griner are among those who will miss part or all of the season due to pre-season or in-season injuries.

The league's proactive approach to addressing injuries is commendable. In September, Unrivaled introduced a six-player developmental pool, a strategic move to ensure game continuity in the face of injuries. However, the injury situation extends beyond this season's challenges.

The first season of Unrivaled was marred by a plethora of injuries, a concern raised by at least one WNBA General Manager (GM) in May 2025. ESPN's Kendra Andrews shed light on these concerns in an interview with anonymous WNBA GMs, who expressed league-wide worries about the impact on players' health. Some even suggested that Unrivaled might be more physically demanding than playing overseas.

Interestingly, some players currently missing time on the court were injured before joining Unrivaled. In addition to Ionescu, Collier, and Sabally, Aari McDonald suffered a right foot fracture during the WNBA season. This highlights the cumulative toll of injuries on players.

Amidst these challenges, Aziaha James, drafted as the No. 12 overall pick by the Dallas Wings in 2025, is set to make her Unrivaled debut. Named as one of the developmental pool players, James will join the Phantom BC, filling the void left by Sabally and Evans.

The developmental pool includes Hailey Van Lith (Chicago Sky), Haley Jones (Dallas Wings), Emily Engstler (Washington Mystics), Laeticia Amihere (Golden State Valkyries), Makayla Timpson (Indiana Fever), and Kiana Williams, all poised to step up and contribute when needed.
