Big news for Indian football fans! Ryan Williams, a talented footballer, is now cleared to play for the Indian men's national team. This exciting development comes after FIFA gave the green light, approving his request to switch allegiances.
According to a statement from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), this decision was made after a thorough review under the Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes (RGAS). The review confirmed that Williams, who was born in Australia, fulfilled all the necessary requirements for this international shift.
But how did this happen? Well, Williams had to give up his Australian citizenship and obtain an Indian passport. This was completed earlier this month. And this is the part most people miss... India doesn't allow dual citizenship. So, to represent the country internationally, athletes must hold an Indian passport. A sports ministry policy from 2008 reinforces this, mandating that all national representatives must be Indian citizens. This means that even athletes who are OCI (Overseas Citizens of India) or PIO (Person of Indian Origin) need to give up their foreign citizenship to become eligible.
Williams, whose mother was born in Mumbai, is now only the second foreign-born OCI/PIO footballer to take up Indian citizenship to represent the national team. The first was Arata Izumi, who was born in Japan and qualified through his Gujarati father. He played nine matches for India between 2013 and 2014.
Williams has strong family ties to Indian football. His maternal grandfather, Lincoln Grostate, played for the Bombay (now Mumbai) state football team in the Santosh Trophy in the 1950s.
Born in Perth in 1993, Williams spent his early years in Australia before moving to England in 2010. He joined Portsmouth's academy and made his professional debut the following year. After playing for several English clubs, including Fulham and Barnsley, Williams returned to Australia in 2022, joining Perth Glory. He then moved to Bengaluru FC, an Indian Super League (ISL) side, in 2023, and he still plays for them.
It was at BFC that Williams expressed his interest in playing for India to his teammate Sunil Chhetri, India’s top goal scorer.
Here's where it gets controversial... Williams played for Australia at the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship and the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He even made a senior appearance for Australia in a friendly match against the Republic of Korea in 2019. However, under FIFA’s rules, he's allowed to switch because that senior appearance was in a non-competitive match.
Williams was included in the Indian squad for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers match in Bangladesh, but he wasn’t in the matchday squad because the necessary approvals hadn't come through yet. Now, with FIFA’s approval, Williams is eligible to be selected for India in official international matches.
Also, Abneet Bharti, a Nepal-born defender who plays club football in Bolivia, is reportedly in the process of representing India. He, along with Williams, attended India’s national camp before the Bangladesh match as a trial.
