Owo's Olowo-in-Council Exiles Suspended Chairman
By Dayo Johnson, Akure
The Owo Local Government in Ondo State has taken a firm stance against alleged disrespect and public insults. Hon. Tope Omolayo, the recently suspended Chairman, has been declared persona non grata by the Olowo-in-Council. This decision comes in response to Omolayo's disparaging comments about Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, the town's paramount ruler, as revealed in a viral audio recording. Despite tendering a public apology, the Olowo-in-Council asserts that Omolayo's presence as Chairman is no longer acceptable to the people and traditional leadership of Owo.
In his letter of apology, Omolayo expressed deep regret, acknowledging the disrespect his words conveyed. He emphasized his cultural values and respect for the traditional institution, stating, 'My actions were thoughtless and do not reflect our cultural values, my respect for the traditional institution, nor the esteem with which I regard your person as the custodian of our cherished heritage.'
However, the Olowo-in-Council, represented by High Chief (Dr.) Ademola Obanonyen, the Ogwadogbon of Owo, maintained a firm stance. Obanonyen described the Chairman's conduct as 'sacrilegious' and urged the Ondo State Government to take administrative measures for peace. He emphasized the Olowo's role as a symbol of unity, peace, and progress, stating, 'Any attempt to ridicule the person or sacred institution he represents is an insult to the entire Owo Kingdom, our ancestors, and our collective heritage.'
The Council declared Omolayo persona non grata, citing his actions as a provocation and assault on the throne. They urged the Ondo State Government to preserve peace and mutual respect. The statement concluded by emphasizing the Owo Kingdom's zero-tolerance policy towards insolence against its throne, a symbol of centuries-old civilization, wisdom, and dignity. Leaders at all levels are urged to uphold these values.
