The New York Mets have finally landed their ace! After a winter of searching, the team has made a significant move to bolster their pitching staff, acquiring All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers. This trade, finalized late Wednesday, also brings right-hander Tobias Myers to New York, in exchange for prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams.
This is a big deal for the Mets, and here's why: Peralta, a two-time All-Star, is coming off his most dominant season yet, boasting an impressive 2.70 ERA over 176 innings and 33 starts. What makes this acquisition even more remarkable is his $8 million salary for the 2026 season, which is an absolute steal for a pitcher of his caliber.
David Stearns, the Mets' president of baseball operations, made it clear that adding a top-tier starting pitcher was a priority. Interestingly, Stearns was the Brewers' general manager back in 2015 when they first acquired Peralta and played a key role in his development into the star he is today. On the flip side, the Brewers are receiving two intriguing prospects. Brandon Sproat, a third-round pick in 2022, made four major league starts last season after being promoted, recording a 4.79 ERA. He finished his minor league season with a 4.24 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 121 innings at Triple-A. Jett Williams, a 22-year-old infielder and center fielder, was a 14th overall pick by the Mets. He finished last season in Triple-A batting .261 with 17 home runs, 34 stolen bases, and an .828 OPS across 130 games in Double-A and Triple-A.
