That's the reality for patients at Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas, thanks to Dr. Tyler Jorgensen and his innovative ATX-VINyL program. This program brings the magic of vinyl records directly to patients' bedsides, offering a unique form of therapy.
Pamela Mansfield, a 64-year-old recovering from neck surgery, perfectly encapsulates this experience. As the music of George Jones fills her room, she finds herself swaying, momentarily forgetting the stiffness and discomfort. "Music makes everything better," she says, a testament to the program's impact.
Dr. Jorgensen's vision extends beyond mere entertainment. He collaborates with volunteers who curate a selection of records tailored to each patient's taste, providing a personalized and comforting experience.
"I think of this record player as a time machine," Dr. Jorgensen explains. "You know, something starts spinning — an old, familiar song on a record player — and now you're back at home, you're out of the hospital, you're with your family, you're with your loved ones."
The Power of Nostalgia and Connection
For many patients, like Mansfield, the music evokes cherished memories. The familiar sounds of country legends like Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard transport them back to simpler times, often sparking conversations and laughter. This emotional connection is a key element of the program's success.
But here's where it gets controversial... Dr. Jorgensen's journey into music therapy wasn't immediate. It began with a struggle to connect with a patient. Then, playing the Irish rock group Thin Lizzy, and witnessed a breakthrough. The patient, once withdrawn, opened up, sharing stories and vulnerabilities. This experience highlighted music's profound ability to unlock emotions and foster connection.
Vinyl vs. Digital: A Sensory Experience
Dr. Jorgensen believes that vinyl records offer a more intimate and personal experience than digital music. The warmth of the sound, the crackles and pops, create a unique sensory experience that resonates deeply with patients.
The program has grown, with a collection of over 60 records. The most requested album is Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, followed by Willie Nelson, Etta James, and John Denver. During the holidays, the Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas gets plenty of play.

For patients facing serious illnesses, the ATX-VINyL program offers a welcome respite. It provides an opportunity to create new, positive memories in the face of adversity.
"Now you're sort of looking at it together and thinking, 'What are we going to do with this thing? Let's play something for Mom, let's play something for Dad.'" Jorgensen says. "And you are creating a new, positive, shared experience in the setting of something that can otherwise be very sad, very heavy."
The program's impact extends beyond emotional comfort. For patients like Pamela Mansfield, music becomes a source of motivation. As she celebrates small victories, like standing for three minutes, the music fuels her determination to keep moving forward.
