Detroit SportsNet Launch: Tigers & Red Wings Get New TV Home - What It Means for Fans (2026)

The Detroit Sports Scene Gets a New Home: Tigers and Red Wings Make a Bold Move

In a move that shakes up the regional sports broadcasting landscape, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment has unveiled Detroit SportsNet, a fresh initiative amidst the decline of Main Street Sports Group.

Following the Braves' recent launch of BravesVision, Ilitch has taken a similar path, creating a dedicated platform for its beloved Tigers and Red Wings. This development comes hot on the heels of the Tigers' decision to sever ties with Main Street Sports, the parent company of FanDuel Sports Network, along with eight other MLB clubs.

"We understand the importance of providing a consistent platform for our fans to enjoy Tigers baseball and Red Wings hockey throughout the year," said Ryan Gustafson, President and CEO of Ilitch. "Given the recent uncertainties in the industry, we wanted to ensure our fans had a reliable home for their sports fix."

But here's where it gets controversial... Ilitch's move mirrors that of the Texas Rangers, who created the Rangers Sports Network last year. MLB Media, the league's in-house production and distribution arm, will continue to handle backend functions for Ilitch, just as it does for 14 other clubs. This raises questions about the league's involvement and its potential impact on the industry.

The creation of Detroit SportsNet is a strategic move to provide a clear identity for the two teams' local TV presence. Direct-to-consumer subscriptions are priced at $19.99 per month or $189.99 annually, comparable to other RSN streaming packages.

And this is the part most people miss... The decline of Main Street Sports Group has sparked a wave of similar moves across the NHL and NBA. Many of the 19 combined teams currently signed with Main Street are expected to follow suit, but not until after their seasons conclude this spring.

So, what do you think? Is this a smart move by Ilitch to secure a stable platform for its teams, or is it a sign of a shifting landscape in sports broadcasting? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
