The Los Angeles Clippers' abrupt parting with franchise icon Chris Paul has sent shockwaves through the NBA, leaving fans and analysts alike questioning the team's motives and future. During the offseason, the Clippers made a bold move, attempting to assemble a championship-caliber team by signing veterans like Paul, Bradley Beal, and Brook Lopez to complement their core of James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. This strategy, however, resulted in a roster with an average age of 30.7 years old on opening day, making them the oldest team in NBA history.
Yet, amidst a nightmarish start to the season, the franchise decided to release Paul. Was he made a scapegoat for the team's struggles?
Paul, who was in his 21st NBA season, wasn't exactly putting up All-Star numbers. Before his release, he averaged just 2.9 points and 3.3 assists per game in a career-low 14.3 minutes. His role was expected to be limited, and he had announced his retirement at the end of the season. Still, the Clippers couldn't keep him on board.
Back in December 2011, Paul was traded to the Clippers from the New Orleans Hornets. He was an elite two-way guard, averaging 15.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. At 27 years old, he was the franchise-altering player the Clippers desperately needed.
During his six-year tenure, Paul became one of the franchise's greats. He led the Clippers to the playoffs all six seasons, a feat they hadn't achieved in the previous 14 seasons combined. He earned the nickname “The Point God,” and alongside Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, they formed “Lob City,” which gave the franchise a new identity. For the first time, Los Angeles basketball was largely defined by the Clippers, thanks to Paul. He reinvigorated basketball for Clippers fans.
Although the Clippers never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, Paul averaged 18.2 points, 9.6 assists, and 2.1 steals during his tenure. His scoring ability and playmaking earned him four First Team All-Pro selections, three Second Team All-Pro selections, and one Third Team All-Pro selection. He was also named to the All-Defensive First Team every season but one. During this time, Paul had a strong case for being the best point guard in the NBA.
When Paul signed with the Clippers this season, many fans and players expected it to be a farewell tour for Paul.
However, Paul's release was broken via his own Instagram story, which read, “Just found out I’m being sent home.”
Shams Charania, an NBA reporter for ESPN, reported that tension had been building between Paul, the coaching staff, and ownership.
“Chris Paul and his leadership style clashed with the Clippers,” Charania wrote on X. “Paul has been vocal in holding management, coaches, and players accountable, which the team felt became disruptive. Specifically: [Head Coach] Ty Lue was not on speaking terms with Paul for several weeks.”
Paul had been in and out of Lue’s rotation to start the season, but severing ties so early seems like a panic move.
In a statement, Clippers president of basketball operations, Lawerence Frank, said, “No-one is blaming Chris for our underperformance.”
Paul has come to terms with the decision.
Lue has also revealed that the reports of their relationship were untrue.
Currently 14th in the Western Conference standings, the Clippers' season has been a disaster. The negative press of the Paul debacle comes on the heels of the alleged false investment in Aspiration as a way to bypass max-contract restrictions for Leonard.
As of early December, the Clippers are three games back of the 10th seed while not owning their first-round pick. This failure looms over the front office, coaches, players, and fans. It seems they could have given Paul a farewell tour.
