Apple Valley Unified Teachers Association, led by President Karen Saber, has organized a picket to demand competitive salaries and improved working conditions. They believe that attracting and retaining quality teachers is crucial for providing the best education to their students.
"We are at a disadvantage compared to neighboring districts," Saber emphasized. "Lucerne Valley, Snowline, and even Helendale offer better compensation. Our district should not be at the bottom of the list."
The teachers' concerns are valid. With veteran teachers leaving due to better opportunities elsewhere, the remaining staff is stretched thin, affecting the support and instruction students receive.
"Our students deserve the best, and competitive salaries are essential to keeping great teachers and counselors," Saber explained. "We're not asking for the moon; we just want to be recognized for our dedication."
The school district, however, has a different perspective. They offered a 3% salary increase for 2025-2026 and an increase in health benefits, but this didn't satisfy the teachers' demands.
District officials acknowledged the teachers' right to protest and engage the community, but negotiations have reached an impasse. They plan to involve a mediator from the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) to facilitate further discussions.
"This process aims to find a resolution," district officials stated. "But it could also lead to a formal Fact-Finding report, which is a last resort."
The situation is tense, with teacher morale at an all-time low. Saber believes something must change to prevent further loss of quality educators and ensure students receive the education they deserve.
