The rise of AI-generated content on social media has teenagers struggling to discern reality from fiction. As AI technology advances, it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart real videos from those created by artificial intelligence. This is evident in an experiment where four high school students were shown 21 short videos, 10 real and 11 AI-generated, and asked to identify them. Despite their best efforts, the students barely performed better than chance, correctly identifying only 67% of the videos. The AI-generated videos were particularly deceptive, leading the students to believe they were real 33% of the time. This highlights a growing concern among experts like Jeremy Carrasco, who runs a social media account dedicated to spotting AI videos. Carrasco warns that AI companies are downplaying the risks of deepfakes, and the proliferation of these videos on social media is deeply troubling. He emphasizes the importance of detection and prevention, encouraging users to look for specific signs like security camera footage or wavy, glitchy 'AI noise' in videos. By being vigilant and taking proactive steps, such as unsubscribing from AI-video-producing pages, users can protect themselves from the deceptive nature of AI-generated content.
